When I relocated to the East Coast, I was forced to part ways with a lot of things. This wasn’t my first relocation, but I now had teenagers in tow and would trek 2,000 miles to New Canaan, Connecticut. Things had accumulated like never before. Like many families, “all this stuff” was now one of my biggest hurdles to my dream of relocating. I had my not-so-fun with online selling apps, yard sales, and giving things away, until I realized I had no time and was holding on to things I shouldn’t. I made the decision to donate it, and I can honestly say, letting go has never felt better.

There are many wonderful organizations that will accept your donation, but I picked four to recommend, not just due to personal experience, but because they do a lot of good for a lot of people. They also offer a variety of service areas across the country, including New York and Connecticut, and I find the online scheduling to be remarkably easy. They pick it up at your designated area, donations are tax deductible, and in addition to clothes and household items, some take furniture, appliances, and even automobiles! These donations are used to help those who really need it. Whether you are considering relocation or spring cleaning, letting go of “all that stuff” cannot be easier or feel better.

Vietnam Veteran’s of America

“Your generous donations of clothing and other household goods make a big difference in the lives of America’s Veterans and their families. The items you donate generate the majority of the funding to support local, state, and national programs of the Vietnam Veterans of America.”

Salvation Army

“When you donate goods to The Salvation Army, those items are then sold at our Family Stores. And the proceeds are used to fund our Adult Rehabilitation Centers, where those in the grip of addiction find help, hope, and a second chance at life.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters

“You can donate clothes, shoes and other household items to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Your clothing donation today will inspire a child in our community to reach his or her full potential through an ongoing relationship with a caring adult. When you donate clothes, you make it possible for BBBS to match at-risk children with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.”

Habitat For Humanity

“Habitat ReStores are home improvement stores that accept small and large donations of new or gently used furniture, appliances, housewares, building materials and more. Proceeds from the sales of these items help Habitat's work in your community and around the world.”
